Malta defeat Andorra to set up showdown with Luxembourg

Malta made it two wins in a row in the UEFA U15 Development tournament when they defeated Andorra in another close match thanks to a late goal scored by substitute Katrine Jorgensen.

Malta were looking to follow up on their victory against the Faroe islands in their second game against Andorra in the UEFA WU15 Development tournament. Coach Kirsten Attard made two important changes bringing in Shanaia Mifsud for Jorgenson and Martina Mendez Vazquez instead of Katrina Catania

Malta were doing all the running in the early minutes but did not create any meaningful opportunities.

The hosts had an unfortunate incident after 20 minutes when captain Amberley Borg had to be replaced after suffering an injury. Although the local girls pressed hard, they could not break down a well organised Andorra defence.

Five minutes before half time, substitute Katrina Catania also suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Katrine Jorgensen.

The second half was similarly devoid of any goal scoring opportunities with both sides rarely making ventures forward.

In the final minutes, Malta pressed but could not find a breakthrough until the 85th minute when substitute Katrine Jorgensen finally found the net with a fine angled shot in the first real action of the match.

Earlier today, Luxembourg beat the Faroe Islands 1-0. The Luxembourgers also defeated Andorra last Tuesday after penalties, which means that the two top teams will meet on the final match day. The Malta versus Luxembourg clash is scheduled to kick off on Sunday morning at 10h at the Centenary Stadium.
