For the second consecutive year a financial scheme linked to World Cleanup Day was launched. This global day, which is celebrated every year, unites millions of volunteers, governments, and organizations to combat the waste problem and encourage a clean and ecological environment. This year, the World Cleanup Day will be celebrated on Friday, 20 September 2024.
46 local councils in Malta and Gozo will benefit from a fund of around €65,000 after applying for the financial scheme linked to the World Cleanup Day. These funds will be used for the organization of cleaning and waste collection activities in their respective locations. The activities will be organized during the month of September.
The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici emphasized the importance of this initiative. “This initiative is important to convey a clear message about environmental responsibility and keeping public places clean. The cleaning that will be done in the streets, gardens, beaches, and open spaces will help improve the quality of life in our communities.”
The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, said, “This initiative will generate more knowledge and awareness about the need to keep public places clean. A healthy and clean environment has a positive impact on human health and contributes to reducing disease. Investing in cleanliness is an investment in our health.”
This initiative aims to unite local communities to help with environmental change and increase awareness of the importance of a clean environment.
