“Youths are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also the key to solving our most pressing global issues today – you are the pioneers of peace, sustainability, and security.” Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg expressed Malta’s commitment to youth empowerment during a meeting with members of the Executive Committee of the Malta Model United Nations Society (MaltMUN) at the House of Parliament in Valletta.
MaltMUN is a non-profit organisation committed to fostering excellence in youth and preparing them to participate in Model United Nations conferences locally and abroad. The Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade provided financial support to MaltMUN for its 2024 Annual Conference, which was held a few weeks ago in Valletta with the theme “Global Resolve: Charting a Path to Stability”. The conference brought together around 70 youth delegates from Malta and several other countries, one of the largest numbers of participants since this event was first held in 2015.
“By investing in the development of young leaders, we are contributing to a more stable and peaceful world,” Minister Borg said, as he stressed Malta’s continued efforts to engage youths at different international fora. “The inclusion of youths in dialogue on current global challenges is key to achieving durable and sustainable peace. You are also positive agents in our collective response to the climate emergency and the swift adoption of the required mitigation measures to avoid further consequences in the future,” he added.
During the meeting, the MaltMUN representatives presented the four simulation resolutions adopted by the 2024 Conference, including a resolution on the impact of the Russian war in Ukraine on children’s education, a resolution on new measures to protect maritime trade routes from the consequences of piracy and other related threats, a resolution calling for the consolidation of the OSCE missions in Central Asia, and a resolution appealing for more humanitarian aid to the people in Myanmar.
Michael Gatt, MaltMUN Secretary General, said that “over the course of MaltMUN 2024, we have seen the emergence of new ideas and innovative solutions to the challenges that our world faces. This is testament to the creativity and leadership that youth demonstrated throughout the conference, both in organising and participating.”
