The restoration work on the Chapel of Our Lady of Light in Žebbuġ is about to be completed. This chapel is one of the projects selected under the restoration scheme for the Local councils. This project was proposed by the Local Council of Zebbuġ and the restoration work started in September 2023.
The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici, during a visit to the site, stressed the importance of these projects to continue to preserve our historical and cultural identity. He thanked all the workers involved in this project. “The restoration of the Chapel of Our Lady of Light is testimony to how important the preservation of our cultural heritage is. This is to ensure that the historical sites remain part of our community for future generations”, concluded Minister Bonnici.
The chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Light is one of the oldest chapels in Zebbuġ. Before this chapel was built, another chapel existed on the site. During the Second World War, in 1941, the chapel was spared major damage when a bomb fell nearby but did not explode. However, when the bomb was detonated in the place, the chapel sustained considerable damage in the bell tower. The damage had been repaired so that the chapel could continue to be used. All the work, from the beginning of the documentation, the application for the permit with the Planning Authority, as well as the work on the chapel itself, is being done by the Department of Restoration and Conservation. At this stage of the project, the side and rear facades have already been completed. A little work remains to be done on the main facade and on the bell tower.
Present for this visit was the Mayor of Zebbug Steve Zammit Lupi and several members of the Local Council of Zebbug.
