Daniel Joe Meli extradition case: Government appeals to Opposition to follow legal process

Daniel Joe Meli

The government, through the Ministry for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector and the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, is closely monitoring the developments in the case of Daniel Joe Meli.

While it is essential to unreservedly respect the judicial process, which is currently at the stage of a Constitutional Appeal, the government is taking into account the judgments already delivered by the Maltese Courts, as well as the declarations regarding Mr Meli’s health, considering the unique nature and legal complexities of the situation.

The Government, while taking note of the statement issued by the Opposition regarding the case linked to the extradition process of Daniel Joseph Meli, reaffirms the commitment expressed in its statement dated 15 August 2024, a position already communicated personally to Meli’s relatives in a meeting that took place earlier.

The Government takes the opportunity to appeal to the Opposition to appreciate the legal complexity of the situation, the legal parameters of a treaty signed in 2006 and the voluntary acceptance with the assistance of a Lawyer.

The Government is evaluating every means within the legal parameters and even others so that those who have broken the law in Malta face justice in Malta, while it will be ensuring stronger safeguards in the procedure where a person voluntarily gives the -its consent to extradition.
