Kurt Farrugia has been appointed as the CEO of Transport Malta and will be starting his assignment with effect from Monday, August 12. He replaces Mark Mallia who was appointed Head of the Secretariat in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Minister Chris Bonett thanked Mark Mallia for the work he carried out during his time as Head of the Authority. Minister Bonett wished Kurt Farrugia well and claimed that the Ministry is looking forward to carrying out important and strategic reforms with innovative long-term solutions that are needed in the field of transport in the country.
In August 2019 Kurt Farrugia was appointed Chief Executive of Malta Enterprise, the country’s economic development agency. During these years Malta Enterprise was in charge of leading the economic response to the pandemic and managed more than €800 million in wage supplement and other schemes. In these years also substantial investments were attracted to Malta such as Ryanair in the field of aircraft maintenance, Torrent Pharma in the field of pharmaceuticals and GIMAS in the field of sustainable technology.
As well as the growth of ST Malta through an application with the European Commission under the IPCEI 2 project, as well as expansion projects of De La Rue, Trelleborg and Baxter which are among the largest foreign direct investment in – the country in recent years.
In recent years a boost has also been given to innovative start-up companies in technological fields. Previously, Mr. Farrugia served as Head of Government Communications and later also as a member of MCAST’s Board of Governors for three years. Mr. Farrugia is a graduate in Communication and also has a Master’s in Enterprise from the University of Malta.
