In Castille, the best agreement for educators was signed between the Government and the Teachers’ Union, the MUT. The sectoral agreement will mean a strong improvement in the income and conditions of educators working in public and church schools.
In an address made by Prime Minister Robert Abela before the signing, he recalled how the Government promised a significant improvement in the conditions of educators and today we have the best agreement for educators.
Dr. Abela defined educators as a driving force in the educational field and he notes that the agreement contains increases in salaries for all grades of educators. The agreement is for five years and will start counting in arrears from the beginning of last year until the end of 2027. The agreement also contains career advancement at a faster pace and will continue to strengthen the professional development of educators.
Prime Minister Robert Abela pointed out the importance of the health of the country to be able to invest in crucial areas such as education. He said that this agreement is part of a chain of other agreements that have given substantial increases to the workers and in the time to come there will be others to benefit more workers. He said that we wanted to give greater value to the teaching profession. The Prime Minister claimed that for a Government that believes in social justice it must prioritize the educational sector, which is an important pillar and pawn in the changes we want to continue to bring about in our country. “Investments in more tools in the schools and in the learning of tomorrow, where we have ongoing discussion about the new strategy for the education sector, we want to spur learning that translates into the best opportunities and careers for Maltese and Gozitan youth in areas that are profitable and give added value to our economy,” stressed Prime Minister Robert Abela.
The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima also spoke at the same news conference. While he thanked all those involved in the discussions that led to the best sectoral agreement that educators have ever had, he said that this agreement is also the first agreement through which the Government and the Teachers’ Union have a common vision for continuing the transformation of the educational sector. “By working together, with the educators, with the social partners, with the representatives of the educators, with the parents and with the students themselves we will see that in this sector the person really is at the center,” said Minister Grima.
The President of MUT Marco Bonnici claimed that this agreement is the result of negotiations on an agreement that recognizes the experience, qualifications and commitment of the educators and supports them to continue offering the best learning experience to students.
The sectoral agreement was chaired by Prime Minister Robert Abela, Minister Clifton Grima and Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana.
