Strengthening the agricultural sector through a set of new regulations

Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo announced a set of new regulations through which the very crucial sector of agriculture in our country will continue to be strengthened. These regulations are the 2024 Categorization of Farmers Regulations.

Their aim is to create categories of agricultural holdings and categorize farmers according to their economic activity. These regulations are in line with the National Agricultural Policy and complement the Agricultural Land Reform.

Minister Refalo stated, “An important point of these regulations is that this categorization will serve as a tool to better understand the agricultural sector and better identify and address its needs. This tool will also provide better visibility of the agricultural sector for policy makers to issue stronger and more focused schemes and policies.” He added that these regulations will be crucial for the sustainability of the agricultural sector. “All this goes hand in hand with reforms and initiatives issued by the Government in the past years and months and is therefore another confirmation that the Government continues to build on, and strengthen what it has implemented,” concluded Minister Refalo.

The Director for Agriculture, Marco Dimech, explained that, “Through these regulations a legal framework will be provided for commercial agricultural holdings to be identified in different categories according to their annual income calculated based on the size of – the agricultural holding and of the standard outputs applicable to them.”
