Cabinet backing for Chris Fearne

Castille, Valletta. Seat of Prime Minister

The Cabinet of Ministers notes the most serious allegations published in the last hours that the former Deputy Prime Minister, Chris Fearne, was the target of a campaign designed to create false stories against him.

The Prime Minister Robert Abela has always expressed clear confidence in Chris Fearne so much that he insisted with him that he should not resign from the position he held and this as expressed in letters published on 10 May 2024. The Cabinet of -Ministers have always supported this position. The Cabinet also notes that in relation to these allegations published in the last hours, the executive Police had already confirmed that stories that were broadcast in other countries’ media regarding Chris Fearne were not theirs.

In light of these latest developments, the Cabinet of Ministers supports the position taken by the Prime Minister, on Monday the first of July, when he immediately declared that an investigation should be carried out on the allegation that Chris Fearne was the target of fake stories. No one should be subject to any attack of this type, even more so when he is acting in the name of the people with the aim of securing what is right. Therefore the Cabinet of Ministers is sending a strong signal that such behavior will not be tolerated.

The State Attorney was asked to take all the necessary steps in the international arbitration through the local and international legal team. Thus if, as alleged, hospital concession money was used to fabricate stories, these will be added to the demands that the Maltese Government is already making against Steward. The Cabinet of Ministers also recalls how currently in the Maltese Courts there is a case opened by the Leader of the Opposition against the State Attorney, the consequence of whose requests is, among others, for Chris Fearne to be personally sued .

The Cabinet also notes how the Opposition has always been ready to try to break the former Deputy Prime Minister, in particular when it was announced that Chris Fearne will be nominated as the European Commissioner of Malta. The Nationalist Opposition was never interested in Malta’s position, but in the immediate partisan political capital. The Cabinet of Ministers again condemns with the greatest force this behavior of the Opposition, while again declaring its confidence in Chris Fearne, as the Prime Minister has already done.
