Defending champions Italy limped out of Euro 24 as Switzerland celebrated one of their greatest nights in European football.
Goals either side of the break gave the Swiss total command of a game they never, never, came close to losing.
Freuler struck with a little over five minutes of the first half remaining, a deserved lead for Switzerland who had completely outplayed their more fancied opponents.
Italy offered little in those first 45 minutes, they fared as badly in the second half.
And the referee had barely whistled for the start of the second half when Switzerland doubled their lead.
A fast break, the ball played into Vargas on the edge of the box who turned and fired past Donnarumma. Switzerland two up and Italy stunned into silence.
Outplayed by Spain, they only made the last 16 thanks to a 98th minute equalizer against Croatia. There was to be no last minute reprieve in Berlin.
Fantasy football, not a bit. This was a disciplined display of football from Switzerland who showed that playing as a team can produce results.
As for the Azzuri, the Italian press will be calling for answers. Will manager Luciano Spalletti have any answers.
