In a news conference, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo announced a new initiative of the Malta Food Agency, through which the work of Gozitan farmers will be facilitated.
It was explained how the Food Agency, within the Ministry, will be providing a free transport service to Gozitan farmers, where through this service the Agency will be delivering the agricultural products from Gozo to Malta. This service will be provided twice a week, to meet the demand.
The agricultural products will be transported directly to Pitkalija in Malta where they will be registered and distributed to the sales agents according to the direction of the farmers. Labels will also be printed on the outside of each product to ensure traceability.
The minister said that this service is aimed at reducing costs for Gozitan farmers, especially those related to transport such as fuel and the cost of the ship. He reiterated that this initiative will improve efficiency and increase the accessibility of Gozitan agricultural products in the Maltese market.
“Through what we are announcing today, the Government is recognizing the work of the farmer, as it will see that the product that has been grown with so much wisdom and dedication is appreciated by the Maltese and Gozitan consumer. . This initiative complements many other measures where we are seeing that the many burdens brought by the international scene on the so crucial sector of agriculture are not borne by the farmers themselves but there is the continuous shoulder of the State,” concluded the minister.
