Tories take hammering in Local Council elections: Labour now largest party

Jubilant Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer

England’s Conservative Party took a hammering in Local Council elections, losing around 1,000 seats across the country.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak saw his ruling party lose control of 50 councils, a result described as a “massive wake-up call” by party chairman Greg Hands.

The Labour Party picked up more than 500 seats, making them the largest party of local councils. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the results show his party on course to win a majority at the next general election.
