Gladiator, the sequel, to be filmed in Malta

Russel Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator

The sequel to the blockbuster Gladiator is reported to be shot in Malta, with the shooting expected to start in the beginning of summer.

Filming is expected to last about four months and will be largely shot at Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, which also served as the main setting for the original film.

The new film comes 23 years after Gladiator, which starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, was released. The film bagged the Oscar for the best picture while Crowe won the best actor.

Directed by Sir Ridley Scott, the film is expected to have Denzel Washington, as well as Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan among the lead roles.

Paramount has set a November 2024 release for the epic.
