The President of Malta on state visit to Ireland

The President of Malta George Vella and Mrs Miriam Vella left Malta for a state visit to Ireland at the invitation of the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins.

President Vella will hold an official meeting with President Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence and office of the President of Ireland. The President’s engagements also include, among others, meetings with the Prime Minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, and with the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin.

When in Ireland, the President will also have meetings with cadets of the Armed Forces of Malta who are currently training at Curragh Military Camp and Maltese students studying at University College Cork.

This state visit follows the State Visit to Malta by President Higgins in May 2022 and his participation in the informal meeting of the Non-Executive Heads of State of the European Union, known as the Arraiolos Group, which was held in Malta last October.

The delegation of the President of Malta in Ireland includes the Minister for Inclusion, Voluntary Organisations and Consumer Rights, Julia Farrugia Portelli.

While President George Vella is in Ireland, Professor Frank Bezzina will serve as Acting President of Malta. The President and Mrs Vella will return to Malta on Saturday, 4th March 2023.
