Man arrested shortly after armed robbery in Naxxar

A man was arrested shortly after an armed robbery and assult in a flat in Naxxar at midday on Wednesday.

Officers were called to a flat in Pjazza Toni Bajada after a couple reported they had been robbed by an armed intruder who demanded cash and other items.

The couple, a 42-year-old Dutch man and a 26-year-old French woman, told police the intruder had tied them up and stabbed the man.

The robber then left the flat and was apprehened shortly afterwards in St Paul’s Street when officers stopped a man matching a description given by the victims. A bag which the suspect tried to hide was found to contain a firearm. A further search located the suspect’s car where police found a knife and other items.

The suspect, a 26-year-old man from Serbia, was taken to the police lock-up in Floriana.

The Dutch man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment on his injuries while the French woman was treated for shock.
