Maroons target good performance in Klagenfurt as they face Wolfsberger

After eliminating Radnicki Nis of Serbia in a most dramatic fashion on penalties, Gzira United hope to continue where they had left as they face Wolfsberger AC of Austria at the Worthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt on Wednesday, kick-off at 7:30pm.

This will definitely be a much more difficult game for Darren Abdilla’s side but the Maroons will be aiming for another good performance and possibly a positive result after remaining unbeaten in the four matches played so far.

Wolfsberger finished third in the Austrian Bundesliga in 2018/19 which qualified them for the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League group stage. They finished in fourth place in Group J of the UEFA Europa League which featured Borussia Mönchengladbach, Roma and Istanbul Basaksehir.

In 2020/21, they entered Group K of the UEFA Europa League, finishing second in a group which featured CSKA Moscow, Dinamo Zagreb and Feyenoord, qualifying for the Round of 32 where they were eliminated by Tottenham.

The 2022/23 Austrian Bundesliga kicked-off two weeks ago with Wolfsberger earning two points in a 1-1 draw with Sturm Graz and a 2-2 draw with Rheindorf Altach. Last season, Wolfsberger finished in joint-second place in the Austrian Bundesliga with Sturm Graz, eighteen points behind champions RB Salzburg.

The second leg between Gzira and Wolfsberger will be played on Thursday 11 with the winner set for a clash with the winner of the tie between Molde FK of Norway and Kisvarda FC of Hungary in the play-off round.
