The beaches of Ramla l-Ħamra, Hondoq ir-Rummien, and Marsalforn in Gozo were awarded the Blue Flag as they met the criteria of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) which in Malta is represented by the Nature Trust.
At a news conference at Ramla l-Ħamra beach, the Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, explained that “this symbol puts more responsibility on us as the Blue Flag challenges local authorities, managers and to beach operators to meet high standards in the four main categories, water quality, environmental management and education, as well as beach safety. ”
The Blue Flag is an important quality certificate that also contributes to sustainable tourism. The Minister explained that he will be continuing the work so that the Ministry can apply for more beaches in Gozo to be given this recognition.
“As a Government we will continue to invest in more facilities, among other things this summer we will be stocking two new first aid stations in Ramla l-Ħamra beach. I call on everyone who visits Gozo to be responsible, in particular when it comes to maintaining cleanliness on the beaches. ”
Nature Trust Chief Executive Vince Attard praised the commitment of the Ministry for Gozo to maintain a high standard of beaches and pointed out that the educational aspect on which the Ministry is working was noted by the Foundation for Environmental Education.
Xaghra Mayor Dr Christian Zammit called for everyone to do their part to keep the beaches clean.
