Liverpool go level with Man City after tight win over Aston Villa

Liverpool needed a big performance from their players as they took on Aston Villa with a win absolutely vital as they continued to hound rivals Manchester City in the race for the Premier title.

Three points adrift of leaders City, Liverpool got off to the worst possible start when they went behind to a Douglas Luiz goal after just three minutes.

That lead was short-lived as Matip fired home from close range minutes later.

Villa were in no mood to be generous with the visitors and chased and hounded Liverpool all over the pitch. Ings carved out a number of chances but found Alison in the Liverpool goal on brilliant form.

Liverpool’s January signing Diaz is already a favourite with the Anfield faithful and it was his cross that set up Mane to head home the winner shortly after the hour mark.

Klopp’s warriors held on to their lead and with the win are now level on points with Manchester City, who play Wolves tonight.

With games running out, the title race is still on a knife edge and both clubs know they cannot afford any slip-ups.
