Insaħħu lill-Ħaddiem: Minister Carmelo Abela visits tourism industry workers as well as those workers providing ancillary services to the tourism industry

Every worker, regardless of whom it is, is important – Minister Abela

“Each and every worker contributes towards the economic development of our country, and these workers and their colleagues form a chain in our economy.”

This was stated by Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela whilst visiting workers at the InterContinental Hotel as well as workers at Swan Laundry and Farsons Group, who provide ancillary services to the tourism industry, on the occasion of May Day Week.

During his visits, the Minister observed the dynamism between workers, and stated that each day workers contribute to not only their successes but also to that of the enterprise to which they belong. That industry in turn provides assistances, services and products to other enterprises and, collectively, to the economy.

He emphasised that the worker is the only resource of our country and, as such, Malta needs to get the best out of the worker by guaranteeing the best conditions of work, all opportunities to further their skills, and the chance of a good harmony between duty and rest.

“During these trying times, the government has continued strengthening its services to support all those in need. The Department of Industrial and Employment Relations replied to 45,000 phone calls and 19,000 emails from the public where it gave information on conditions of work. The compliance section also had a crucial role by informing on the applicable laws, giving temporary permits to adjust conditions of work, whilst also investigating breaches of the Employment Act. We estimate that this has led to the saving of 25,000 jobs.”

Minister Abela placed these results obtained by the department in the context of the collective work done by the government, which saw the safeguarding of 100,000 jobs due to schemes such as the Wage Supplement, which saw an investment of around €400,000,000.

He thanked all workers and those who provide work for contributing to the successes of Malta in the last few years, and affirmed the government’s commitment to providing support so that our country returns to the generation of wealth that reaches all workers and families.
