Requests for Presidential Pardon turned down

In accordance with the advice of the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to advise the President of the Republic of rejecting the request for proclamation made by Alfred Degiorgio, George Degiorgio and Vincent Muscat.

The decision of the Cabinet is not only based on the advice of the relevant institutions, but is also in the national interest and justice.

Prior to the Cabinet meeting, Minister Carmelo Abela stated that in the light of the baseless allegations made against him by Jason Azzopardi and the libel case against him, he decided to resign. Minister Abela explained how he took this decision “although there is no statutory or other reason for me to do so, but only to avoid anyone liking to cast a suspicion of impartiality or doubt in the work of the Cabinet.”
