Prime Minister’s statement as one man jailed for Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder

Today’s events are proof of the effectiveness of our country’s institutions.

Institutions that have been strengthened in recent months, through unprecedented reforms and the provision of all the necessary resources, and support, by Government.

The fact that today a person has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to imprisonment by our Courts of Justice for his involvement in the homicide of journalist Mrs Daphne Caruana Galizia, is a step closer towards justice.

A step closer to establish the truth in this dark chapter for Malta and for the Caruana Galizia family.

In a separate and distinct case – concerning the homicide of lawyer Carmel Chircop in October 2015, Cabinet yesterday decided to accept the joint advice given to it by the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police to recommend the granting of a Presidential Pardon to Mr Vincent Muscat. Earlier today this was endorsed by the President of the Republic.

I have been informed by the Commissioner of Police that a number of persons have been arrested in relation to this case. This also led to the intensification of the investigations related to the homicide of the late Daphne Caruana Galizia.

This is a country where the Rule of Law truly prevails.
