Progress in construction work at the new social housing site in Cospicua

Minister for Social Accommodation Roderick Galdes visited the new social housing project in Triq Hanover in Cospicua. The construction works in this project are progressing rapidly.

This project consists of 6 blocks, 68 apartments, 117 parking spaces, a childcare centre, and a community centre. The project will also introduce an open space of 850 square metres which includes a new square that can be enjoyed by all the residents of Cospicua.

Minister Roderick Galdes recalled the difference that past social housing projects in the historic city of Cospicua have made in the lives of thousands of families who had been given the shelter they deserved.

“These successful outcomes were possible because successive governments accomplished major projects of social and affordable housing, testament to the fact that, as a country, we have always understood that stability in the housing sector provides a solid foundation for human social progress.”

He explained that even in the present day we cannot ignore the realities of specific sections of society who need adequate accommodation.

“That is why we have worked very hard from the very beginning to make sure we are in a position to address the challenges of different families with different solutions. That is why we have developed a wide range of public housing services that are helping various sections of society. However, we do realize that social accommodation remains the most effective tool for overcoming the challenges of vulnerable families and individuals.”

Minister Roderick Galdes concluded by saying that “it is not enough to be aware of the challenges, a government close to the people must have a plan and implement it. That is why early on, as a government, we drew up a clear plan that set the scene for the largest social housing project in these last forty years. Following several years of stagnation in this sector, 1,700 new units will be given to Maltese and Gozitan families in 13 sites around Malta.”

For her part, Malita Investments CEO Jennifer Tabone said that “the company is proudly financing such a project which is not only of national importance, but is also giving Maltese families the opportunity of accessing affordable housing.”

The project was also recognized at the Malta Architectural & Spatial Awards 2019 as the winning project in the Urban Planning Concept category.
