8.10pm :CNN calls Wiscon for Joe Biden. That is 12 electoral votes easing out his lead. Biden 237. Trump 213

6.10pm: Joe Biden takes 3 electoral votes in state on Maine. Donald Trump takes 1 vote.

That 1 vote to Donald Trump is now pending a second confirmation.

Current standing: Biden 227. Trump 213 pending a further count

4.30pm: The numbers have not yet changed. Still Biden 224: Trump 213. 

What are called battle-ground states, such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona and Michigan have not called their results. With many postal votes still being counted it may take some time before America knows who their president will be.

1pm: Voting remains tight with neither side able to claim victory.

States that will be crucial are Pennslyvania (20), Wisconsin (10), Arizona(11) and Michigan (16). The numbers in brackets are the electoral votes. Remember the winning number is 270.

The race to the White House is turning out to be very tight with predictions that it will go down to the wire.

The number needed to win is 270.

The current standing according to CNN is Biden 206, Trump 136 but the message is be patient. There is a long way to go in counting the votes. It could go either way.
