Malta and Libya in talks on combating crime and border protection

The Minister of Interior, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri welcomed the Libyan Minister of Defense Salahedin Namroush for an official visit to Malta.

Bilateral talks between delegations from both countries focused on common challenges in the Central Mediterranean, especially the roles played by the two countries’ armed forces in the fight against crime and border protection. While acknowledging the great work being done by the Libyan Coast Guard to control irregular immigration, other topics of interest in the areas of defense and security were discussed.

Through these discussions, the Maltese Government expressed its readiness to assist the Libyan authorities in strengthening their resources. This is especially true when it comes to sharing expertise, logistical assistance and training officers in areas such as maritime law and search and rescue coordination.

Minister Byron Camilleri described this collaboration as a means of getting Libya back on its feet and to be one of the most strategic partners in the Mediterranean. He added that the authorities in the two countries enjoy special relations between them.
