Champions League

Some of the biggest names in world football are in Champions League action tonight.

Bayern Munich face Atletico Madrid, Manchester City are home to FC Porto, Real Madrid entertain Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter face B M’Gladbach and Liverpool travel to Ajax.

Liverpool’s injury list continues to grow as centre-back Joel Matip joined Virgil van Dijk on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the Merseyside derby. Van Dijk picked up a serious knee injury after being clattered by Everton’s keeper and looks likely to miss most of the season. Midfielder Thiago is also ruled out and keeper Alison has not fully recovered.

Pep Guardiola wants to win the Champions League with Manchester City. That is his burning ambition. So far he has not gone beyond the quarter final stages. Could this be his year? First up is a home tie against Porto.

Reigning champions Bayern Munich remain the side to beat. Last season they completed the treble. They kickoff the defence of their title against Atletico Madrid.

Inter have started this Serie A season with two wins, a draw and one loss and will be looking for a home win against B M’Gladbach.

Real Madrid are just a point off the lead in La Liga with a game in hand. Tonight they start their Champions League campaign at home to Ukranian club Shakhtar Donetsk.
