Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg launched the Regulations for Light Passenger Transport Services and Vehicle Hire, one of a series of reforms in the transport sector. Earlier this year, Transport Malta also introduced regulations for the introduction of micromobility in our country.
Minister Ian Borg said, “The government is carrying out a consolidation exercise in several sectors. We have many laws, regulations, and guidelines that needed or need to be updated or consolidated. This sector also needed to be revised. The new regulations will benefit everyone, including operators, workers in the sector and service users. Our ultimate goals were to improve the level of standards and safety for passengers, to strengthen enforcement and to ensure a more level playing field. We want more people to use different transport services, whether by public transport, shared services, bicycles or the hire of these services. The new regulations give operators a more established and organised role, with more equality in the market, while creating opportunities for drivers and introducing new conditions for vehicles being used, as well as services thanks to digitalisation. Enforcement is also being strengthened with harsher but clearer penalties than what we had before. The government’s work remains aimed at local and national improvement for the benefit of all Maltese and Gozitan people. This also includes transport services with standards befitting those working in the sector or using it.”
