New drugs for prostate diseases

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne has launched two new medicines on the Government formulary.

It is estimated that around 15,000 people will be using these medicines, which until now were bought by patients at a cost of around € 400 per year.

“In the past, the only solution for men who had a prostate problem was surgery. Today, thanks to medicines, we know that many patients do not need surgery with all the risks it entails. To date, these patients have been buying prostate-related drugs at a considerable cost. Therefore, over the past year we have included prostate problems on Schedule V, as one of the conditions under which you can take free medicines for it and we have started to gradually introduce free medicines on the Schedule V. form, ”said the Deputy Prime Minister.

The cost of free medicines for prostate problems is around € 5 million a year.

It is estimated that 50% of men have already suffered from prostate problems by the time they turn 50 years old. 75% of men have prostate problems until they turn 80 years old.
