Update as Beirut explosion death toll rises

The number of dead in Beirut’s huge explosion has risen to at least 135, with around 5,000 injured and tens of people still missing, Health Minister Hamad Hassan announced.

Up to 300,000 people have been left homeless after thousands of tonnes of exploded in a warehouse at the port on Tuesday.

A two-week  state of emergency has  been declared as rescue  teams continue to search for survivors.

The cabinet has ordered that port officials responsible for storing the ammonium nitrate since 2014 be placed under house arrest.
