The Ministry for Social and Affordable Housing welcomes the fact that the Standing Committee on Accounts of the National Audit Office yesterday unanimously approved the resolution on property transfer submitted by the Minister for Social and Affordable Housing, Roderick Galdes.
This resolution dealt with the transfer of lands from the Housing Authority to the Affordable Housing Foundation after an agreement was reached to transfer this land through the perpetual emphyteusis model in favour of the foundation. This is so that these lands can be built for affordable housing purposes, in such a way that their full potential can be enjoyed by the beneficiaries of the foundation who need assistance to become owners of affordable housing.
This transfer involves land in Fgura, Kirkop, Marsaskala and St Julian’s (Ta’ Ġiorni). The Affordable Housing Foundation was established back in 2022 when an agreement was reached between the Government of Malta and the Archdiocese of Malta to partner together in the creation of the first Affordable Housing Foundation in Malta. The aim of the Government and the Archdiocese, as two founders, was to continue to address the demand for affordable housing.
From the very beginning, this foundation entered into discussions with the Housing Authority in order to assist the authority in achieving national targets regarding the provision of affordable housing for that middle class of people who have more income and assets than the social housing eligibility parameters allow, but require support to become homeowners at a price lower than that of the current private residential market.
These lands will enable the foundation to provide affordable apartments to the Maltese and Gozitan people.
All of this is also in line with the Malta 2050 Vision which focuses among others on the inclusiveness and inclusion of every person in our society, including young people, through affordable housing.
