The regeneration project of Birgu Square is completed

€3 million investment in the heart of this historic city

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett inaugurated the Vittoriosa City Square Regeneration project, in Vittoriosa. With an investment of just over €3 million, this historic square now has a completely new look with modern infrastructure, full protection of the rich cultural heritage of these areas, and better accessibility for families living in the city and all those who visit this city.

The responsibility for the project was in the hands of Infrastructure Malta (IM) in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA). Apart from the historical element, this project will strengthen the status of Vittoriosa as a cultural and tourist centre. In addition to the infrastructural work on the services that pass underground, a notable change is the surface of the square. While previously dedicated more to the use of cars, the majority of the square has now been converted into a pedestrian area. Apart from giving this Square a much more beautiful appearance, the IM and MTA team that worked on the project also saw to it that they chose elements and materials that match the historical environment of this city.

Ian Borg thanked all those who worked on this project, including IM and MTA, other entities and ministries and especially the Birgu Local Council. “Above all, thank you to all those who live, work and visit this locality – you played a part in this project and now, this square is in your hands, to continue to make it a beautiful Maltese square, in a truly wonderful city,” said Ian Borg.

“Through projects like this, the government and all partners in the tourism industry are raising the quality of the tourist experience and community life by preserving and enhancing everything that distinguishes Malta from other destinations. This Square encompasses many of our unique characteristics – great history, traditions, festivals, built heritage, club life and tea shops. What could be more beautiful for tourists to visit us? The more we invest in the authentic attractions we offer, the more the MTA invests in clever advertising that attracts those seeking unique Mediterranean experiences, the more we attract quality tourists who are willing to pay more for these truly Maltese and Gozitan experiences. This is the transformation we are working towards as a country, as a people – a transformation that forms part of the Malta 2050 Vision, and with which we are giving a quality of life “All the best to everyone in Malta and Gozo,” concluded Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg.

Minister Chris Bonett explained that, “The Birgu square serves as a model for how modern infrastructure and historical preservation can go hand in hand, to create a vibrant, functional and sustainable space for future generations.” He mentioned that despite the various challenges presented by this project, as a result of the rich history of the area in which it is located, today the Birgu community and all those who visit this city, can enjoy a square designed to be a lively and active center and that respects the historical value of the surroundings.

“This regeneration project represents a significant investment in the future of Vittoriosa city. By bringing this main square back to life, we are not only preserving our past, but we are also creating a public space for the community to meet. This is our vision in the area of infrastructure, where with this project and others like it, we are reconfirming our commitment to creating more open spaces for people while prioritising alternative modes of transport such as walking and cycling,” concluded Minister Chris Bonett.

Mayor of Vittoriosa, John Boxall, thanked central government for its help in making the Vittoriosa residents’ dream a reality. “The council has worked hand in hand with government entities since the beginning of the project, so that today Vittoriosa has a square worthy of this city full of history that anyone who visits it can enjoy,” said Mr Boxall.

Due to the archaeological sensitivity, all excavation and restoration works were carried out under the strict supervision of archaeologists approved by the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage. In particular, the original paving materials discovered in the Collachio area were preserved and incorporated into the new design along with elements found in another area that were also integrated into the design of the square. During the works, several reservoirs that had been abandoned over the years were found, as well as two cisterns on both sides of the main reservoir under the square. These have been cleaned and are being used as part of the new rainwater network system, which will store water in them for use as needed.

Works on this project also included:

  • Replacement of drinking water pipes along with localized work on the sewage system.
  • Urban furniture combined with new planters and trees.
  • Installation of a new network for the rainwater system.
  • The electricity lines and services were removed from the facades.
  • Preparatory work has been carried out to install charging pillars for electric vehicles in the future.
  • New modern lighting has been installed that respects the area’s environment.
  • Bicycle stands have been installed, to facilitate better access and encourage sustainable mobility.

Also present at the inauguration ceremony were Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul as well as the Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef.
