Bishop Emeritus Paul Cremona has passed away aged 79.
He was admitted to hospital on Tuesday but died later in the evening.
He had been suffering from ill health for some years and in 2014 asked the Vatican for permission to step down as head of the Catholic Church in Malta due to health issues.
