Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett presided over the signing of a new collective agreement between Malta Air Traffic Services and the General Workers’ Union (GWU). This new agreement, for workers in the AIM department, will bring improvements in their working conditions and financial package.
In comments following the signing of this new agreement, Minister Chris Bonett explained that, “This agreement is important so that these workers who are so dedicated and important in the operation of MATS will be benefiting from a substantial improvement in both their pay and working conditions.”
The minister said that this agreement came a few weeks after another collective agreement was signed within MATS and this is clear evidence of the government’s commitment to continue investing in the country’s best resource, its workers. He thanked the management team within MATS, the Industrial Relations Unit (IRU) within the Office of the Prime Minister, the AIM Union Committee and the General Workers’ Union for their full support throughout this process and who were fundamental to reaching this important agreement.
Chief Executive Officer of Malta Air Traffic Services, Architect Claude Mallia, said that, “This agreement continues to confirm the company’s trust in its employees who are essential in order to achieve the ambitious goals we have ahead of us.”
Jurgen Azzopardi, representative for the Maritime and Aviation section within the GWU, said: “Today we closed another collective agreement at the MATS company where many employees will benefit from substantial increases, arrears and better conditions. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this process and from here on we continue to look forward to further work together.”
This collective agreement is the third of its kind in the last year for workers within MATS, and continues to demonstrate the government’s work to ensure that the aviation sector continues to grow, building on the successes it has experienced in recent years.
