Parliament approves land transfer for a new electricity centre in Siġġiewi

Parliament has unanimously approved the transfer of land in Siġġiewi for the construction of a new electricity distribution centre by Enemalta plc under a 65-year lease.

This decision marks an important step in the country’s efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure, ensuring a more reliable service with greater capacity to meet the ever-growing demand.

After considering the public interest in this development, the Lands Authority deemed it justifiable to transfer a 1,800m² plot of land in the area known as Il-Qasam iċ-Ċkejken on Triq San Niklaw, Siġġiewi.

Parliament’s approval ensures that the project can now proceed as planned. This decision reaffirms the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure and supporting sustainable economic development.

Minister for Lands and Implementation of the Electoral Program, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, stated, “The approval of this land transfer to Enemalta is proof of investment in public land for public benefit. Utilising government land to strengthen our country’s infrastructure is a priority in land management.”

Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, emphasised that this investment is part of the government’s vision to build more sustainable energy solutions. “We are investing in a more modern and flexible system that ensures a more efficient and reliable energy supply. This project will enhance the energy infrastructure and continue to support our objectives.”

This decision is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the country’s electricity infrastructure, ensuring improved resilience and capacity. The new Siġġiewi Distribution Centre will play a critical role in meeting the needs of Siġġiewi and surrounding localities, including Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Ħal Qormi, iż-Żurrieq, il-Qrendi, and Mqabba. The facility will contribute to improved electricity services in the entire region by alleviating the load on existing distribution centres in Ħal Kirkop, Ħal Far, Mosta, and Marsa.
