The President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, attended the commemoration of 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, in Poland, where approximately 1.1 million people were killed.

The President joined a number of people who were liberated from this concentration camp on 27 January 1945. Together with leaders from around the world, the President of Malta placed a candle as a gesture of respect towards those who were killed in this concentration camp.

In the speeches of some of the survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau there was a common message that the Holocaust began with small gestures of exclusion and discrimination in everyday life, and they warned that even today, the hatred that could lead to history repeating itself should not be ignored.

This commemoration brought to an end the official visit abroad of President Spiteri Debono, who will return to Malta late Tuesday evening.
