President Myriam Spiteri Debono in audience with Pope Francis

President Myriam Spiteri Debono had a private audience with His Holiness Pope Francis, at the Vatican.

During the meeting, the Pope spoke about his experience in Malta during the official visit in 2022, and refreshed memories of his time studying in Buenos Aires, on his way to becoming a Jesuit, where he had two Gozitan students studying with him. The Pope also spoke on several other topics, including women in leadership and the importance of increasing the birth rate.

During her visit to the Pope, the President was accompanied by her husband, Dr Anthony Spiteri Debono, other members of her family, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Dr Ian Borg and his family, the Ambassador of Malta to the Holy See, Frank Zammit, and officials from the Office of the President of Malta who all had the opportunity to meet Pope Francis.

During this meeting, the President of Malta presented Pope Francis with medical equipment to be used at the Ambulatorio Madre di Misericordia clinic which, on the Pope’s own initiative, offers free health services to patients in need. In addition to this medical equipment, a momento containing Maltese and Gozitan dishes was also presented to the Pope.
