The International Space for Contemporary Art of Malta – MICAS inaugurated

Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated the first International Space for Contemporary Art in Malta, MICAS, in Floriana. A building which is spread over an area of ​​four thousand square meters and which will be offering spaces for exhibitions and contemporary artistic installations, both for Maltese and international artists. This project leads with a comprehensive investment of €30 million.

In the address of the occasion, Prime Minister Abela claimed how the opening of this space symbolizes the collective progress of the country. “What I am referring to is the progress that is also affecting our cultural field as a result of the work of the brave and innovative artists we have, hand in hand with our commitment as Government to continue to increase and create awareness on beautiful elements of the Maltese identity,” claimed the Prime Minister as he pointed out that with this investment the Government is continuing to trust the artists with the identity of our country.

Dr Abela also reiterated how the Government will continue to act in favor of the artistic field with more investment so that artists have more platforms and help to expose their talents. “Malta wants to be a center in the Mediterranean for artistic creativity. I supported these words some time ago when we launched the first edition of the Biennale.art and I am pointing it out again today with more conviction because I really believe in it. Malta should be the natural home of artists,” said Dr Robert Abela. The Prime Minister also pointed out how this extensive project has given new life to an area in Floriana in which it is located and thus will also help to push more quality tourism, in particular the cultural one.

The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici also addressed the inauguration ceremony who said, “The inauguration of MICAS today is a historic moment that represents another step towards the building of Malta as a major center for contemporary art and international cultural dialogues. This ambitious project of €30 million is not only the result of an election promise fulfilled, but it is a symbol of how art can strengthen our society, by providing spaces for creativity and social cohesion. MICAS will serve as a platform for Maltese, Gozitan, and international talents to exhibit their work, while strengthening cultural tourism in our country.”
