“The strength of the collaboration between us lies in the different perspectives we embrace.” This was the main message of Prime Minister Robert Abela as he attended the first summit between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council in Brussels. A summit whose aim is to develop a closer partnership with the member states that make up this council. These include the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.
In his address, Prime Minister Robert Abela focused on the challenges concerning the two regions including the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. In fact, while pointing out his satisfaction regarding the work in favor of mediation and diplomatic solutions from the Gulf region, in the Middle East, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the importance of an agreement in favor of the cessation immediate relief from the fighting and access to humanitarian aid for those in need in Gaza. He also reiterated that the hostages should be freed while the realities of Israel should be addressed. This is apart from the importance of working with the Palestinian authorities in order to carry out the necessary reforms.
“These are essential if we want to make irreversible progress towards a two-state solution and prevent further escalation in the region”, said the prime minister. Dr. Abela also addressed Iran’s involvement not only in this region but also in the European region, particularly with its cooperation with Russia. Here he asserted, “We must work together to convince Iran, that it cannot be tolerated to facilitate the conflict in Ukraine.”
As soon as he mentioned the situation in Ukraine, the prime minister reiterated that the role of the international community is crucial in order to win lasting peace. This while the common principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity among others, must be protected now more than ever.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abela also hinted at the potential of the partnership between the European region and that of the Gulf as he explained that opportunities such as those in the renewable energy sector and maritime transport can strengthen commercial relations between these -both regions. The prime minister closed his address by noting that the ability of the two regions to work together, share their knowledge and build strong ties will determine whether these challenges are successfully addressed.
“The world looks to regions like ours to lead by example and I am confident that through dialogue and cooperation, we can contribute in a positive way to shape the future of international relations,” concluded the prime minister.
