“In Gaza, the humanitarian crisis is catastrophic. The delivery of humanitarian aid and respect for International Humanitarian Law are non-negotiable.” This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg at today’s Foreign Affairs Council which was held in Luxembourg. The meeting preceded other high-level meetings that will be held this week in Brussels, namely the EU-GCC Ministerial Meeting tomorrow evening and the EU-GCC Summit on Wednesday.
Deputy Prime Minister Borg stressed that the delivery of humanitarian aid is not a matter of choice but an obligation under International Humanitarian Law. He further emphasised that while Israel has the right to defend itself, the protection of civilians and adherence to humanitarian principles must remain paramount. Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the implementation of a permanent ceasefire, which is the only viable solution to alleviating the humanitarian crisis.
Turning to the situation in Ukraine, Deputy Prime Minister Borg reiterated Malta’s unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression. Malta will continue to provide humanitarian assistance, especially with the approaching winter, while working closely with international partners to strengthen support efforts. Malta remains committed to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine based on the solid principles of the UN Charter.
During today’s Foreign Affairs Council’s meeting with the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs David Lammy, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg reiterated Malta’s appreciation for the continued cooperation and solidarity shown by the United Kingdom in various global crises. The Ministers focused their exchange on the ongoing crises in the Middle East and Ukraine, with particular emphasis on strengthening collaborative diplomatic efforts. Deputy Prime Minister Borg stressed the need for ongoing efforts towards a sustainable political solution in the region. “Diplomacy remains our strongest tool,” he affirmed.
