Sliema Wanderers won the Summer Cup, organised by the Malta FA, after defeating reigning premier league champions Hamrun Spartans 2-1 in the final at the National Stadium on Saturday despite playing for almost half an hour in ten men.
The Blues were a better side, creating the better chances throughout the ninety minutes and it was only late in the game that Hamrun tried to react and managed to reduce the gap.
The Wanderers took the lead on 14 minutes with a diagonal shot from the right by Geoffrey Acheampong which beat goalkeeper Celio.
Three minutes in the second half, the Wanderers were awarded a penalty after Joseph Mbong handled the ball inside the area and from the penalty spot, Murilo Henrique converted.
Sliema were reduced to ten men on 66 minutes when Steve Pisani was sent off for what was deemed a violent tackle on Daniel Letherby.
Raphael Lopes pulled one back with a powerful shot from outside the area four minutes in added time.
After the game, Sliema were presented with the cup by Malta FA Vice-President Adrian Casha.
