Malta increases its investment in renewable energy and public interest also continued to increase

From 2023 to June 2024, Malta has seen significant investment and public interest in renewable energy systems. The Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) received more than 65 offers for medium to large-scale energy installations. These offers have a potential total capacity of over 97,700 kW, which is equivalent to enough energy for 35,600 households or a reduction of 60,000 tonnes of CO2.

During a conference organised by REWS, Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli reiterated Malta’s commitment to invest heavily in renewable energy. “Our goal is to increase the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, with the aim of generating 25% of Malta’s energy from renewables by 2030. By investing in renewable energy, we are not only working towards sustainability but also taking concrete steps in our climate action plan,” said Minister Dalli.

This year, REWS will issue four calls for energy project proposals, with two already launched in April and June, and the remaining two scheduled for August and November. Minister Dalli emphasized the government’s dedication to boosting investment in clean energy infrastructure across Malta and Gozo, working closely with the private sector to achieve sustainability and Malta’s decarbonisation goals.

REWS CEO Ing. Marjohn Abela expressed his satisfaction with the positive response received from Maltese and Gozitan residents. He highlighted the success of initiatives supporting the installation of photovoltaic panels and batteries in residential homes. Applications opened in February and funds were fully allocated by June, prompting an increase in the budget from €5 million to nearly €10 million to accommodate more applicants.

Ing. Abela also reported receiving 351 battery applications in 2023 and 1,178 by mid-July this year. He reaffirmed REWS’s commitment to building on past successes and continuing to manage these schemes to facilitate Malta’s transition to a cleaner environment.
