European Commission authorizes payment of €58.9 Million from the Recovery and Resilience Facility for Malta

The European Commission authorized the second payment to Malta under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), which excluding pre-financing amounts to €58.9 million, confirmation of commitment and efficiency in implementation of the national recovery plan.

On 21 December 2023, Malta submitted its second request for payment under the RRF for the same amount of €58.9 million, a request covering 29 milestones and 5 objectives. These concern various reforms in the fields of construction, waste management, transport, health, education and training, justice, the fight against corruption and tax.

They also include investments in energy efficiency, transport, digitalisation and healthcare. After a positive preliminary assessment by the Commission on 26 March 2024, and with a favorable opinion of the Economic and Financial Committee of the Council, the way was prepared for the final approval of the funds.

This payment will increase the total amount of funds that Malta receives under the RRF to €166.3 million, which represents half of the funds scheduled for the Maltese plan, with 39% of the projected targets already reached. The Malta Recovery and Resilience Plan, with a total funding of €328.2 million in grants, reflects the Maltese Government’s strategic approach to address present and future challenges.

This is being done through reforms and investments that improve the crucial sectors for the socio-economic development of the country, which shows the commitment towards strengthening the economic and social well-being of Malta.
